Training

  • Plan: I started playing with the Strava-Mcmillian training program, but nothing serious.
  • Shoes: Brooks Cascadia Trail Runners - WTF!?.
  • Watch: Garmin Vivo Activ 4.
  • Apparel: Nike Flex 7" shorts, old running hat, and Oakleys.
  • Supplements: Nothing.

I had a coach for the previous training block and it taught me a lot. For this one, I tried to do it myself to save some money.


Pre-race

  • Accommodations: Home.
  • Race Package: 🤷
  • Dinner: 🤷
  • Sleep: 🤷
  • Breakfast: 🤷
  • Travel to the Start Line: 1.5 hour drive to Banff from my home.
  • Strategy: I didn't have a plan for this race. I just wanted to set a new PR.

I can recall that it was raining on the drive to Banff. Luckily the weather cleared up when I arrived into town.


Race

  • Start Time: 10:30 AM
  • Shoes: Brooks Cascadia Trail Runners - WTF!?.
  • Watch: Garmin Vivo Activ 4.
  • Apparel: Nike Flex 7" shorts, old Banff race t-shirt, old running hat, and Oakleys.
  • Supplements: Nothing.
  • Hydration: Aid stations.
  • Aid Stations: Just water.
  • Potty Breaks: Nope.

The only thing I can recall about this race is that I felt very nauseous at the tail end of the race and the feeling continued for an hour after the race.

I have no idea what made me decide to wear my trail runners to the race. What an idiot! 🤦


Post-race

  • Finish Time: 01:46:17
  • Average Pace: 5:09/km
  • Overall Placement: 158th of 1148
  • Category Placement: 16th of 84
  • Recovery Meal: McDonald's wrap.

My family was at the finish line for this one, but I felt so nauseous that I couldn't really enjoy it.

After this race, I started focusing on in-race nutrition because I was so completely naive about it and I'm pretty sure it sabotaged my race.
