Training

  • Plan: Strava-McMillian Plan that's included with the Strava subscription. 12 weeks total.
  • Shoes: Brooks Ghost 15s.
  • Watch: Garmin Vivo Activ 4.
  • Apparel: Nike Flex 7" shorts, OC running hat, Solomon Active Skin 8, and Oakley Holbrooks.
  • Supplements: Huma Gels and LMT.

This was my first serious training block and it was my first time training with a smart watch.

Pre-race

  • Accomidations: Air BnB in Whitefish by the ski hill.
  • Race Package: Pickup was swift and there was good swag too.
  • Dinner: Spahgetti and a beer.
  • Sleep: Pretty good, 7-8 hours.
  • Breakfast: Eggs, oatmeal, and a banana.
  • Travel to the Start Line: 15 minutes.
  • Strategy: Lay back for the first 15k and then push harder near the end.

Forgot my bib and had to turn around. Got to the start line with 10 minutes until start. I was a bit flustered, but it worked out.

Race

  • Start Time: 08:00 AM
  • Shoes: Brooks Ghost 15s.
  • Watch: Garmin Vivo Activ 4.
  • Apparel: Nike Flex 7" shorts, Whitefish race t-shirt, OC running hat, Solomon Active Skin 8, and Oakley Holbrooks.
  • Supplements: (3) Huma Gels and LMT.
  • Hydration: (2) 500ml flasks. Overkill, I know.
  • Aid Stations: Did not use the aid stations because I wore my hydration vest.
  • Potty Breaks: None and no tummy trouble - thank god.

The race started with all distances at once so it was tough to tell who you were running beside. The course started downtown and looped on country roads. I thought it was a beautiful scenic course. I am definitely going to return for the full marathon.

Post-race

  • Finish Time: 01:38:32
  • Average Pace: 4:41/km
  • Overall Placement: 38th of 526
  • Category Placement: 6th of 35
  • Recovery Meal: Massive burger and fries at Mudmans.

This was the first race where I felt very strong. I was passing people throughout the race. I didn't expect my quads to get completely destroyed. One thing that really surprised me was the negative splits at the end of the race. I always struggled with ending races but this one was different, it felt like I was sprinting for the last few kilometers.

I also wasn't sure what my finish time was going to be. I assumed it was going to be tight to 01:44. When I saw 01:38 at the finish line, I was shocked. It was hard to believe that I beat my PR by six minutes. I was gleeful for several weeks after the race. It was a major confidence booster too.
